“So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be."

Reading between the linesGijs Van Vaerenbergh

Depending on the perspective of the viewer, the church is either perceived as a massive building, or dissolves — partly or completely — into the landscape. Those viewers that look from the inside of the church to the outside, on the other hand, witness an abstract play of lines that reshapes the surrounding landscape. In this way, church and landscape can both be considered part of the work — hence also its title, which implies that to read between the lines, one must also read the lines themselves. In other words: the church makes the subjective experience of the landscape visible, and vice versa.

We are buried beneath the weight of information, which is being confused with knowledge; and quantity is being confused with abundance and wealth with happiness. We are monkeys with money and guns.

I know the nights you believed someone would come for you,
take you out of here,
when the weight of those empty pockets and your ugly reflection
ate holes through the grip they told you to get
while you were being pulled under.
You know about being pulled under.

And i know it makes ya say things you just don’t mean
like DIE mutherfuckers!
DIE DIE mutherfuckers!
Hold tight if i love ya
‘cause it might not last long.

I know you hate hope
because it’s the hope that makes you stay
and it’s the stay that’s got you down,
but you stay so far off the ground.

So I made a fist
of my heart, hoping
throwing the first punch
would leave me stronger
